Australian Government Launches COVID-19 Australia App Plus WhatsApp Feature

Two weeks after the Government first committed $2.4 million to developing an app to provide up to date information and support surrounding COVID-19, it has been launched. The app is available on both Apple and Android devices, providing a trusted place of advice and information for those in Australia about COVID-19.

Developed by Canberra tech firm, Delv, the app has been in development for two weeks in order to get the information out to citizens as soon as possible.

What is included in the app?

The new app builds on the recently launched COVID-19 Australian government website, which was designed to centralise information on the pandemic. Within is all information on recent announcements and health advice straight from the government.

You can also register your self-isolation through the app, improving the flow of information to the government on those self-isolating. The app also allows you to access the HealthDirect service so you can check on your symptoms and see whether you need to be tested for COVID-19 or not.

Since launch, the app has been received well, with over 482,000 downloads on Sunday alone. Users have also rated the app highly, with, at the time of writing, a 4.3 out of 5 on Apple’s app store and 3.5 out of 5 on the Google Play Store.

How to download the app

If you want to download these apps simply head over to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store on your phone. From there search for “Coronavirus Australia”. It should be the first app in the search results, having the Australian coat of arms emblazed on a black background. Tap on the “Get” button or “Download” button and download the app on to your phone.

WhatsApp message service

If you have WhatsApp downloaded on your phone you can also receive updates and support from the government through the Australian Government’s WhatsApp application. All you need to do is to message the service through WhatsApp and follow the instructions to receive the latest news, numbers, check your symptoms and more.

To get started with the WhatsApp service, download WhatsApp onto your phone and add the Government’s WhatsApp number into your WhatsApp contacts. The number is +61 400 253 787. From there, message the number on WhatsApp and follow the instructions.

Our thoughts

These tools are great for helping us all stay up to date and to keep an eye on any symptoms, or remain vigilant about self-isolating. It is important however, and is the Government’s advice, not to look at the numbers every day. Instead, focus on enjoying what you have, practice gratitude, and keep exercising. Through this time, our mental and physical health, and that of those around us should be at the top of our minds.
